When settled in 1861, Aguilar was known as ‘San Antonio Plaza.’ The settlement was primarily designed as a trading post for farmers in the area. Many years later, coal mines came into the area, further increasing interest in an area that’s name would later be changed match that of the landowner, J. Ramon Aguilar. Aguilar was officially founded in 1894. Today, the Las Alamos County town is home to 584 people.
